The 22 year old has become one of the most highly rated young midfielders in Europe after an excellent season with Sporting and his impressive performances earned him a place in the Portugal squad for the World Cup finals in Brazil this summer.
The report states that Arsenal and their London rivals Chelsea have sent scouts to watch Carvalho during Sporting’s 1-1 draw with Academica on Saturday, but both Mourinho and Wenger will have been less than impressed after Portuguese midfielder was shown red in the 66th minute.
It further suggests Chelsea are favourites to land the youngster, but the Gunners who have been keeping tabs on the youngster all summer, are adamant they won’t be beaten to his signature. He has a release clause of £35 million, although both Arsenal and Chelsea are hoping they can tempt the Portuguese side to let him go for a little less.
The young midfielder has only spent one full season with Sporting Lisbon where he made 29 appearances in the league. He was a key figure in the club’s rise from 7th position to 2nd last season. The Gunners are in the market for a defensive midfielder and it seems they have identified Carvalho as one of the prime contenders for that post.
Style of Play:
Carvalho is a versatile defensive midfielder who has remarkable composure on the ball as well as his anticipation, agility and power in breaking up opposition attacks being among his strengths. He is physically dominant in the middle and is a fierce tackler who never shies away from a battle. He has a knack for finding men out wide with accurate lofted passes, as well as keeping it simple along the floor.
Should we Buy?
The Gunners currently have the experienced pair of Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta guarding their defence, but both men’s powers are arguably on the wane. Carvalho is certainly a potential solution as he would provide a towering presence in the centre of the park. He’s an intelligent user of the ball, but crucially has the powerful physique that is required to dominate the Premier League.
It’s hard to say if he can be an immediate starter next to Aaron Ramsey or as someone able to provide the midfield unit with some depth, Carvalho would be a smart signing at good price. He is a future superstar at a position of need for the Gunners and Wenger would know the value of signing such a talented holding midfielder at the age of just 22.
