Arsenal are reportedly poised to make an audacious bid to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, according to reports in the Express.
The Gunners are desperate to sign a quality striker before the transfer window closes on Monday following the injury sustained by Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman reportedly broke his foot at the end of his side’s 2-2 away at Everton last weekend and it has since been revealed that he could be sidelined for a number of months.
The report states that the North London club will look to sign Paris St-Germain star Edinson Cavani as Giroud’s backup. Arsene Wenger is determined to sign the Uruguayan before the end of the window, with a £50 million bid believed to be in the works.
He is widely recognised as one of the world’s best number nines thanks to his exploits with Napoli and PSG, where he has scored 26 goals in 44 appearances since completing a €64 million transfer last summer. However, he endured a frustrating debut campaign, having been shifted out to the right flank for much of the season in order to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The report further states that the 27 year old is rumoured to be unhappy at the Ligue 1 side with Ibrahimovic taking centre-stage and although the Uruguay international is prepared to give his PSG career one more season, an offer from Arsenal could be too good to turn down.
Cavani scored 16 goals in 30 league games last season, managing two assists, meaning the Uruguayan averaged one assist every 15 games and he also has an impressive shot accuracy of 45% in 96 attempts. He has a passing accuracy of 86%, he beats his men 56.25% of the time and won 46.67% aerial duels.
Style of Play:
Cavani is a natural striker who can play on both wings, but he’s by far stronger as a centre forward because of his positioning and instincts. He is an excellent finisher with both of his feet, but his greatest asset is his head. He’s magnificent in the air due to his strength and powerful jump. He’s got the instinct to be at the right place at the right time, his movement and positioning giving him an advantage to create promising chances.
Cavani has also got very good pace to break away from the defence and be very dangerous at counters. He is a hard-running and diligent worker, but he occasionally ‘disappears’ in a game. He can score goals out of nothing from his passivity, but he mostly isn’t present in the attack if he has a bad day.
Should we Buy?
The Gunners are in desperate need of a striker as the club enter the final days of summer transfer window, the matter has been given more importance now Giroud is expected to be out for at least 3 months. Cavani is a player that can offer a lot in the opposition box, but if space opens up outside the box then he has been known to score some top class goals and this is something Arsenal could do with at their disposal.
They need that extra dimension in attack so that they do not become too predictable and Cavani would be a perfect addition to the squad. He will not be easy to get and he certainly won’t be cheap, but the value of such a signing could be priceless.
