Arsenal have reportedly made an improved offer to Sporting Lisbon for midfielder William Carvalho, according to reports in Goal.com.
The 22 year old has become one of the most highly rated young defensive midfielders in Europe after an excellent season in Portugal. Arsenal have already failed with a £20 million bid for the Portuguese international, but a new bid shows that they are pretty serious on bringing him to the Emirates.
The report states that the Gunners have made an improved bid of around £21.3 million for the midfield anchorman as they try to push through a deal in the final days of the transfer window. The north London club are waiting on a response from Sporting, who have indicated in discussions that they are prepared to reduce their initial £28 million valuation.
It further states that the Gunners have been working on signing the youngster for many weeks and are now in the final stages of ironing out the complications of his third-party ownership. The complex nature of the negotiations means they are likely to go down to the wire but Arsenal are increasingly hopeful of capturing the midfielder before Monday night’s transfer deadline.
The youngster has been chased by a host of clubs across Europe, including the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid, but Arsenal are thought to be the closest to signing him.

Key Stats: (Via Squawka)
His club form was rewarded with a call-up to the Portugal World Cup squad and despite the countries lacklustre efforts in South America, Carvalho was very impressive. He had an astute pass accuracy of 90%, misplacing just ten passes and attempted 16 tackles at the World Cup for his national side, winning seven of them which represented a success rate of 44%. His reading of the game is developing and he has controlled his tendency to commit one too many fouls.
Style of Play:
He is predominantly a defensive midfielder who has remarkable composure on the ball, as well as his anticipation, agility and power in breaking up opposition attacks being among his strengths. He is physically dominant in the middle and is a fierce tackler who never shies away from a battle. He has a knack for finding men out wide with accurate lofted passes, as well as keeping it simple along the floor.
Should we Buy?
The Gunners are in desperate need for a commanding presence in the heart of their midfield, as they are heavily reliant on having a disciplined holding player shoring things up. Aaron Ramsey is inclined to bomb forward at every opportunity, so Wenger needs to pair him with someone who offers security and Carvalho would offer just that.
He’s only 22 years old and has plenty of time to improve and adjust to the Premier League. Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta are experienced players who play in the same position and with the Portugal man added to that area of the squad, they would have a nice blend of youth and experience.
He’s in the Vieira mould and that is a player Arsenal have failed to replace since the Frenchman left. He will cost around £25 million, which appears to be a gamble for a player that young, but in the long run it could come to see that as a bargain. He appears to have the talent required to anchor the Gunners midfield for a decade.
