Arsenal are reportedly preparing to increase their offer for Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho, according to reports in the Metro.
The 22 year old has become one of the most highly rated young defensive midfielders in Europe after an excellent season in Portugal. The Gunners have been tracking the powerful midfielder all summer but it seems they will make one last move before the transfer window ends.
The report suggests the North London club are preparing to increase their offer for Carvalho if they can overcome Besiktas in their Champions League qualifier. The Gunners head into the second leg at the Emirates on Wednesday night having taken a 0-0 draw from Istanbul earlier last week.
Sporting Lisbon have already rejected a £20 million offer for the midfielder but the Gunners are prepared to return with an improved bid in order to get their man. The youngster has been chased by a host of clubs across Europe, including the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid, but Arsenal and Chelsea are thought to be the closest to signing him.

His club form was rewarded with a call-up to the Portugal World Cup squad and despite the countries lackluster efforts in South America, Carvalho was very impressive. He had an astute pass accuracy of 90%, misplacing just ten passes and attempted 16 tackles at the World Cup for his national side, winning seven of them which represented a success rate of 44%. His reading of the game is developing and he has controlled his tendency to commit one too many fouls.
Style of Play:
He is predominantly a defensive midfielder who has remarkable composure on the ball, as well as his anticipation, agility and power in breaking up opposition attacks being among his strengths. He is physically dominant in the middle and is a fierce tackler who never shies away from a battle. He has a knack for finding men out wide with accurate lofted passes, as well as keeping it simple along the floor.
Should we Buy?
The Gunners have not had a dominant midfield presence since the days of Vieira, who was bossing proceedings as the focal point of the midfield. Carvalho’s positioning is one of the key attributes in his game and he can give Arsenal back the proverbial steel Wenger has been searching for.
He has a release clause of €45 million and that represents a huge chunk out of the bank balance for Wenger. His price tag is too hefty for a player with limited experience, but Sporting are believed to be open to discussing a more reasonable sum. Carvalho seems the more sensible option than Sami Khedira who is not necessarily a straight defensive midfielder.
