Arsenal v Manchester City
Kick off: August 10th, 2014 15.00 PM BST
Gunners won their second trophy in little less than three months. The Community Shield hasn’t been the most important trophy but it’s always a great thing to win some silverware against the rivals. Here are the player ratings from the first competitive match this season in which WE WON OUR FIRST TROPHY!
Wojciech Szczesny | 7.5: He offered safe hands when the Citizens threatened, especially when he prevented Jovetić from scoring and possibly making things complicated for us.
Mathieu Debuchy | 7.0: It’s obvious that he is still gelling with his team-mates but the fact Wenger described his performance as “excellent” suggests Debuchy is on the right track.
Calum Chambers | 7.5: Had an impressive official debut for the Gunners. His composure seemed a bit unreal given that he is just 19.

Laurent Koscielny | 7.0: Didn’t have to play for the entire match which is a good thing as the most difficult period in the whole season is coming. It seems that he needs Mertesacker to show his full quality though.
Kieran Gibbs | 7.5: I usually say that Gibbs is the only player that we don’t have a replacement for. Whenever he puts a performance like the one against City I wonder why Gibbs isn’t considered as the first-choice left full-back for England.
Mikel Arteta | 7.0: Our newly promoted captain was the player I wouldn’t pick against midfielders like Yaya Toure but he did well and Wilshere’s fine performance helped him as well.
Jack Wilshere | 7.5: It’s perhaps stupid thing to say that Jack must make a Ramsey-sque breakthrough this season but it is probably true. His performance against City, especially in the first half, suggests that he has taken all warnings seriously and that he might prove himself as a world-class midfielder.
Santi Cazorla | 7.5: Wembley is a place for joy if you are Santi Cazorla. He scored a lovely opener against the Oilers and hopefully there are more to come in other venues in England and Europe!
Aaron Ramsey | 8.0: MOTM. Scored another impressive goal and it seems that he has become the most important Arsenal player. His performance might make Mesut Özil, the best No. 10 in the world, sweat.
Alexis Sanchez | 7.5: Dangerous, lively, always ready to fight for every ball…and all that while allegedly being “not 100 % ready”. His pass for Debuchy in the very beginning of the match – direct, strong, behind the defence – might be an example of what kind of relationship Alexis will develop with our full-backs. If I’m right, the only thing I can say is: woof!
Yaya Sanogo | 7.0: Played his role in our goals in the first half. It seems that his presence against big teams gives our attacking midfielders more space. Once he improves his technique and composure in front of the goal, he might become a much, much, much improved version of Adebayor.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain | 6.5: Second half was a bit quiet so he didn’t offer too much. Still, Chambo is going to be a huge asset this season.
Nacho Monreal| 7.0: Did surprisingly well in central defence.
Tomas Rosicky| 6.5: A routine performance from our most consistent player last season.
Olivier Giroud| 7.5: Earned himself a MOTM-award that didn’t make more sense than the Golden Ball Messi received at the World Cup. However, it’s a great thing Olivier finally opened his account against Manchester clubs in official matches and the beauty of his goal should inject a lot more confidence in him ahead of big matches that we are going to play in August, September and October respectively.
Mathieu Flamini| 6.5: Helped in making things tight and showed why his nickname is The Flame.
Joel Campbell| N/A: Got his official debut for Arsenal. Didn’t play enough to get a mark for his performance but I can’t wait to see him in action this season.
