Arsenal have reportedly rejected an offer from Liverpool to take Joel Campbell on loan until the end of the season, according to reports in Goal.com.
The 22 year old greatly impressed during the 2014 World Cup and then in the Emirates cup during pre-season, building on an encouraging season on loan with Olympiacos last campaign.
The report suggests the Gunners have rejected a Liverpool approach for Campbell this summer and the Merseyside club are among a cluster of clubs who have made enquiries about taking the Costa Rica international on a season-long loan as they attempt to bolster their strike force.
It further states that Wenger has dismissed the offer out of hand, with the Frenchman willing to give Campbell his opportunity to impress. Wenger confirmed his desire to keep the youngster while speaking to reporters ahead of the weekend’s fixture:
He has come from a non-competitive world to a world with hyper-competition. He has adapted slowly, but has adapted very well, he has a very good spirit and attitude.
He is a member of my squad at the moment, He had a good preparation and played well against Benfica.
In training he is very focused and eager to do well. I would like to keep him.
Campbell is 22 years old and needs regular playing time to continue his development and if Wenger doesn’t believe he’ll find those minutes at Arsenal, a loan is always an option. However, such a move seems unlikely for the youngster as Wenger has treated the winger very much like a new signing.
He greatly impressed during the World Cup and being blessed with pace, technique and a keen eye for goal, the youngster looks ready to make his mark on a higher level. That’s not to say he’s ready to be a regular starter just yet.
The Gunners are lacking a bit of depth in attack, with Giroud, Alexis and Sanogo being the only real strikers in the squad. Campbell isn’t an out-and-out striker either similar to Alexis, but he adds a body to a group of attackers that collectively could make up for any potential extended absence of Giroud.
If his development continues in the same meteoric fashion, there’s no reason he couldn’t even push for a starting position in the near future. The fans don’t want to see Campbell depart the club for yet another loan spell when he has shown so much potential to justify his place in the squad.
