One gets to appreciate the importance of a manager who is given time to work especially after seeing the woes facing Manchester United. It is important to note that this is the same team that Sir Alex Ferguson won the Premier League. When David Moyes was given time to build his team at Everton, he did so with impressive results. Roberto Martinez is the only enjoying the fruits of David Moyes’ hard work.
Louis Van Gaal has an impressive CV. His pedigree is not in doubt and yet he is not just struggling but is actually failing miserably with a terrible record so far. He is only starting to see the scope of what is facing him in his attempt to rebuild the team at Old Trafford. There is no denying he can do it but the question is whether he will be given time.
Sir Alex Ferguson once said you have to make the most of your players and make them believe they are actually better than they really are. In other words, motivation is key. When Fergie was in charge at Manchester United, all players wanted to give their all for the cause. They went over and beyond what was expected from them. Will the class of ’99 actually say they were better than Juventus or Bayern Munich on the way to winning the Champions League…of course not! That is why Arsene Wenger has been able to qualify for Champions League year in year out because the players already knew what was expected.
Another thing Arsenal and Manchester United share can be summed up by a quote by Aristotle, ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.’ Both teams have a set way of playing and when a player leaves, the managers just replace them with a similar player without changing the system. The result is the team remains the same as the new player is given the same role as the player he replaced. How many players have succeeded after leaving Arsenal and maintained the same cult status? Flamini, Song, Hleb, Fabregas, or even Reyes have all flopped. The reason is they have to adapt to different positions and systems or maybe they are just not up to the standard required by the other teams.
It is unbelievable that there are still a set of deluded fans who want Wenger to leave Arsenal now. They actually expect a new manager will come in and win trophies immediately. For those who have continued to place their trust in Arsene Wenger, they are starting to see the results. I would like to express my gratitude to Wenger for his loyalty to the club over the years. A time will come when Wenger and Arsenal will have to part ways but not in the near future.
