The 19 year old produced a mature defensive performance alongside fellow summer signing Mathieu Debuchy as the Gunners kept a clean sheet en route to Community Shield glory.
Wenger admitted that he has been very impressed with the teenager’s performances thus far, suggesting that he could compete for a place in the starting line up if he continues to improve.
According to ESPN, he said:
For a 19-year-old he had an outstanding performance [against City at Wembley]. The kind of performance he delivered is very promising.
It’s impressive because he hasn’t got a long history in this position because he was a right back and I think if all goes well he has a good career in front of him.
He can challenge both centre backs and that’s what you want. You cannot play with two centre backs the whole season; that means he will play.

Chambers is among the best three defenders I have and if I can find another one I will do it, but to find another one of that quality will not be easy.
The Southampton product was solid partnering Laurent Koscielny and then Nacho Monreal in the center of defence as Arsenal cruised to victory over last season’s champions. His strong performance against solid competition is important as the Gunners have lost two center backs options in Vermaelen and Sagna from last season.
The Englishman looked remarkably composed throughout the 90 minutes and considering the tender age his calmness is remarkable. It’s all the more impressive when you consider how little experience he has as a centre-half, as he played predominantly as a central midfielder during his time at the Southampton academy and then as a right back with the first team.
It is an enormous bonus to see Chambers to have settled so quickly in the first team. The Gunners have already lost Vermaelen to Barcelona and appeared to lose Laurent Koscielny with an Achilles problem halfway through the game. With Per Mertesacker still recovering from his World Cup exploits there is a solid chance that Chambers will have plenty of chances in the coming weeks.
Arsenal will still need to add another centre-back but with Chambers’ assured performance means Wenger may be tempted to sign a fourth-choice rather than someone who would block the young Englishman’s path to the first-team.
