Arsene Wenger has confirmed he sees Calum Chambers’ future as a defensive midfielder within the Gunners squad, casting doubt over whether he will invest in that position this summer.
Arsenal spent a reported £16million on the former Southampton starlet and while Wenger acknowledged it is a large sum for a player of his age, he deeply believes in the England youth international.
The north London club have been linked very heavily with Sporting Lisbon powerhouse William Carvalho but if Wenger does indeed think he can nurture Chambers into a starting defensive midfielder in the near future then any move for Carvalho could fall apart.
He’s 19 years of age, he’s a young promising talent and when you’re a manager you believe in the players when you buy them.
I’m a great believer that we spent a lot of money for him, that’s true but in the longer term it is well spent – that is the most important thing.

When a player is bought for a longer period you can never say it’s expensive. At the moment it’s expensive yes but I don’t regret it.
He can play a major role because in what I observe he has the qualities to impose himself in this part of the team. I believe he can play in defensive midfield and that’s where I see him.
It is certainly encouraging to hear Wenger talking of sculpting Chambers into the midfield anchor we crave. Arsenal have heavily relied on Mikel Arteta over the past couple of seasons and he requires an understudy this season which seems likely to be Chambers knowing Wenger’s love to develop youngsters.
Wenger has surprised us so far though by spending approximately £63million so he may still go out and spend big on Carvalho but the exciting, versatile Chambers can be a real player for the future.
