Arsene Wenger praised the performance of 19-year-old Calum Chambers after an impressive Arsenal Premier League debut at centre-half.
The Gunners won the nail biting affair 2-1 at Emirates yesterday thanks to a last gasp winner from Aaron Ramsey, kicking off the new campaign with a well earned three points.
Chambers enjoyed a brilliant run out alongside Laurent Koscielny in the absence of Per Mertesacker, managing four tackles, 2 interceptions and 8 clearances in an assured 90 minutes on the pitch.
Wenger admitted he bought the former Southampton starlet as a right back however he is quickly proving his ability as a viable option at centre-back. With the loss of the departed Thomas Vermaelen, the quick adaption of Chambers to centre-half is a nice surprise.
The Gunners boss told reporters after the match:
I must say, honestly, we bought him as a right back, but in my opinion he could play centre back. I tried it in pre-season and from game to game he becomes stronger. Today he had a remarkable performance.
Without Mertesacker, Arsenal instantly lost experience, organizational skills and height but Chambers looked a natural in the heart of the defence. He put in some sublime tackles and looked confident alongside Koscielny.
Battling well, intercepting multiple attacks both in the air and along the ground, his reading of the game was impressive for a youngster. He also managed around 93 passes with an accuracy of 93.5% which is nothing to be sniffed at. He looked confident in possession and looks to be an important first team player the season.
Certainly he has areas of his game to work on, but he is far more polished and exciting than expected. Were you as impressed with the England youth international?
