Obviously Arsene Wenger is not a fan of Lukas Podolski and does not believe he possesses necessary attributes to succeed at Arsenal but after Olivier Giroud’s injury, he has been forced to turn to Podolski to make up the numbers. So can Podolski force his way into Wenger’s plans? Here is why I think Podolski will be a success at Arsenal:
Good crossing ability as a winger:
Arsene Wenger is absolutely right when he says Podolski is not a centre forward but rather a winger and not a very good one at that. As a winger Podolski rarely tracks back and does not do enough to protect the left back leaving Arsenal vulnerable to counter attacks. He also does not have the same technical ability as the other options although he does possess good crossing ability. He needs to increase his work rate if he wants to succeed in this position.
Lousy movement, lethal striker:
Giroud is always busy around the box pulling defenders out of position and creating spaces for midfielders. Podolski, on the other hand, is a static striker around the box similar to Ballotelli who waits for the ball to come to him but has a lethal shot. He will score a lot of goals if given an extended run in the team but will struggle to break down stubborn defences with his predictable movement.
Podolski has a cult Arsenal fan base on twitter despite his lack of game time. Arsenal fans are willing him to succeed and he owes it to them to prove himself now. He can do no wrong in their eyes and there were a lot of angry fans when it was revealed he was leaving.
It is said a footballer reaches his peak in his late twenties. Podolski is now 29 so should be terrorizing defences instead of sitting on the bench . He knows what is expected of him in terms of his ability and needs to show it. It will be an embarrassment to him if young players like Sanogo and Campbell prove to be better options than him while still learning their trade.
