Borussia Dortmund has established quite a name for itself in recent years, producing an excellent crop of youth players with whom they have won the German title multiple times and even reached the final of the Champions League. But in recent seasons most of their biggest names have moved away to bigger clubs.
One of the few remaining stars is German wunderkind Marco Reus. At 25, he is one of the best midfielders in Germany, and has attracted considerable interest from clubs such as Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Arsenal are also interested in acquiring his services, and have declared so in the past.
And the stakes are about to get higher; at the end of this season, a clause in his contract will become active which will set his release fee to £20 million. As such, the clubs will surely be lining up for his signature, and Arsenal are sure to have a fight on their hands, as revealed by the Express.
Another club with significant interest in the player is Chelsea, who are also reportedly monitoring the situation regarding his contract. They consider him a replacement for Eden Hazard, should Hazard choose to leave for Real Madrid. But since this is dependent on Ronaldo returning to Manchester United, Arsenal still have a strong chance.
Another young player on the radar of both clubs is Mario Gotze. Speaking recently, he signalled his interest in a foreign transfer. Wenger has been a long term admirer of his, and Chelsea were linked to the player before the World Cup, so if he chooses to make the switch, these two clubs would be sure to line up.
Style of Play and Stats:
Reus is known for his versatility, speed and technique. He plays primarily as a left attacker for BVB; however, he is capable of playing on the right also and through the middle, due to his ability to closely control the ball with both feet. He was an important part of the Borussia team that reached the Champions League finals in the 2012-13 season, and made a name for himself due to his trickery on the ball and movement off it. He also as a powerful shot, and is a goalscoring threat from anywhere near the box.
Reus was a team regular throughout the last season, and though Dortmund failed to challenge for either the League title or the Champions League, he stood out with a series of superb performances. Reus finished the season with 23 goals and 18 assists in all competitions.
Should We Buy?
While our wings are rather strong, especially with the purchase of Alexis Sanchez over the summer, to mount a serious challenge in Europe a stronger squad with greater depth is a must. A player of the quality of Marco Reus should never be passed up on, especially when he is available at such a bargain price.
