Arsenal were reportedly working hard on a deal to bring in Sporting Lisborn star William Carvalho which involved a £12.5m payment and the season-long loan of forward Joel Campbell. Sporting however decided not to entertain the offer.
Campbell appeared on the brink of a move to Portugal with Benfica very interested in the Costa Rica international, however Wenger refused any offers despite his apparent lack of faith in the youngster.
Arsenal and Manchester United both made offers in the region of £20m for Carvalho but were rejected. The Portugal international then stated his preference to remain in his homeland for the coming season but that didn’t stop the Gunners attempting one last ditch effort.
Sporting were open to the idea of selling their prize asset for a reduced rate with Carvalho’s £37m buy out clause expiring next summer. The Gunners, according to Express offered Joel Campbell on loan for the season as well as a £12.5m fee for the 22-year-old yesterday.
Unfortunately the Gunners were not able to push through the deal and were left wanting (again) in the defensive midfield department. Arsenal should’ve just offered the money that was necessary to secure Carvalho. Hopefully Arsenal can return in the winter with a renewed bid and beat Manchester United to a player who would greatly improve our midfield.
As for the future of Campbell? It’s not looking positive if he was in fact offered around as part of a part exchange deal. He has some time to prove his worth however, but looks likely to be behind a number of players up front and will likely occupy the wings. He will certainly be involved in the cup fixtures but that may be the extent of his involvement.
What are your thoughts Gooners? Are you gutted to not see Carvalho come in?
