William Carvalho is one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe right now, and was heavily linked to Arsenal over the summer. The Gunners tried their best to land the star, but a move failed to materialise by the end of the transfer window.
And in the first few games of the season itself, the lack of a defensive midfielder has hit Arsenal hard. In the games against Dortmund and the Spurs, a quality man in front of the defence could have made all the difference. As such, Carvalho is still very much on the radar of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
But according to the latest reports out of Portugal, the Gunners are about to be disappointed. Portugese media are carrying reports that Carvalho is set to reject the interest from Arsenal and sign a new contract with his club, Sporting Lisbon. This was in the works for some time now, as the midfielder had recently declared his happiness in the club.
Sporting are reportedly all set to hand their prized asset a massive new deal, as reward for his meteoric rise over the last 12 months. This is another blow to Wenger’s hopes of strengthening the midfield in the January transfer window, especially after reports that Frenchman Adrien Rabiot had also turned down Arsenal yesterday. The list of potential candidates for Arsenal still has a few names on it, including Real Madrid man Sami Khedira and Englishman Fabian Delph, but Arsenal are sure to face stiff competition for both and may end up paying a premium to sign them.
But nevertheless, Arsenal do need a good holding midfielder. The injury to Mikel Arteta further compounds our problems and all we can do is hope that our title challenge still stays on track, especially with a game against Chelsea coming up.
