Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna is on the radar of several English clubs, according to reports in the Metro.
Manchester United are keen on a move for the Italy international, with Arsenal also monitoring the situation closely. Both teams are interested in a January move for the defender to help deal with their injury ravaged backlines.
Ogbonna, who has nine caps for his country, is a centre-back who can play on either side, and has also been used in a back three for the Bianconeri this season. This obviously makes him a top target for Louis van Gaal, who also prefers to play a back three; Arsenal are also on the lookout for versatile defenders.
Arsene Wenger’s men absolutely need to strengthen defensively, with younster Calum Chambers currently the only senior back-up to both centre-backs Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny and injured right-back Mathieu Debuchy, a very precarious situation.
As to whether the defender will be available in January, much will depend on how much game time Ogbonna gets under Max Allegri. A move will be less likely if he gets regular playing time with the Italian champions.
Should We Buy?
The 26-year-old only joined the Old Lady from local rivals Torino in 2013, making 24 appearances in all competitions last year and collecting a Scudetto winner’s medal. So far the defender has appeared in all five Serie A fixtures this season but missed out on the Champions League win over Malmo.
He is technically strong and will add some much needed depth to our defence, but Arsenal will probably only buy if he is available for his original price of £12 million. If we enter a bidding war with Manchester United, it will be tough to bring the defender to the Emirates.
