The Daily Mail has reported that Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama is the latest player to be linked to fill Arsenal’s troublesome defensive midfield role.
After a lackluster display against Dortmund on Tuesday, the need for a top class holding midfielder was once again highlighted, and Wanyama has become the latest man to be linked with a move to Arsenal in January.
The Kenyan impressed in his debut season for Southampton, before fading towards the end of the campaign as he suffered an injury. Arsenal though are clearly lacking in that department, and the former Celtic player would bring valuable qualities to the Arsenal midfield.
The 23-year-old is valued at roughly £15m by Southampton and due to his age could be a good investment, and a slightly cheaper alternative to the likes of William Carvalho and Lars Bender.
Would Wanyama be a good signing?
This is a challenging one. I feel that many Arsenal fans would be underwhelmed by the signing of the Kenyan international and think that Wenger had moved for the cheap option instead of signing one of his more noteworthy targets. In truth Wanyama is not a big name, and he’s not he sort of player that would excite the fans of big teams, but that doesn’t mean he is not a good player.
The work that Wanyama does is invaluable, and in my opinion he is a highly underrated player who formed a key component of Southampton’s success last year. He has important Premier League experience, and is young enough to develop as a player. My verdict is that he would be a good, solid signing , whether he’d be a great one, I’m not sure…
