The Gunners were well beaten by a dangerous and clinical Borussia Dortmund who could’ve bagged a few more.
Our backline was cut apart several times, but were twice hammered by some nifty work from Ciro Immobile and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Not a good day out for our depleting defence.
Danny Welbeck shanked an excellent chance he created with some fine movement himself and another fed by a sublime pass from Mesut Ozil, but Arsenal failed to step up.
Here are the player ratings anyway:
Szczesny 5.0: Made some good saves but also had some nervy moments. Shouldn’t have rushed out so quickly for Aubameyang’s goal, plus he almost handed Dortmund a third when he failed to clear after a bad touch. Needs to learn to clear the pissing ball when someone is charging his way.

Bellerin 5.0: Not a terrible debut for the youngster but nothing to write home about. A few passes went astray but Dortmund were so aggressive in their marking, making it difficult for us. The Spaniard did a new throw in once though.
Mertesacker 5.0: Made a decent interception or two but ultimately struggled with the pace of Immobile and Aubameyang. Usually Kosser saves the day but..
Koscielny 5.0: The Frenchman was unable to deal with the dangerous Dortmund attack. Their pace was scary and we just sucked at the back tonight.
Gibbs 5.5: Gibbs offered more than Bellerin going forward but was obvious he had been missing for the past month. Not sure where he was on some of Dortmund’s counters.
Arteta 4.5: Our captain struggled as expected against Klopp’s quick side, and was wasteful in possession. Not sure he should be the scapegoat for our performance as some are making out.. End of the day the defence was exposed on counters which was predictably going to be the case, thought Flamini would’ve been the better option from the get-go.
Ramsey 4.0: Was he on the team sheet? Another ineffective performance unfortunately. Needs a rest.
Wilshere 7.0: One of the few that actually gave a crap about the game it seemed. But failed to deliver any final product thanks to Welbeck wasting another of his chances. Wilshere should get some kudos for the goal-saving challenge to deny Aubameyang.
Alexis 6.5: Like Wilshere, Alexis tried and tried. Left everything on the pitch as he ran his butt off, unfortunately couldn’t deliver after the offside call when he’d thought he handed Arsenal the lead.
Ozil 5.0: We saw a glimpse of what he can do when the German put Welbeck cleverly through. But faded after that and is just not suited to the wing. Was rightfully subbed.
Welbeck 5.0: Had some chances and should’ve buried at least one. Some positives but has yet to discover the killer instinct we need from our centre forward.
62′ Ox 6.5: Tried to get some things going and added some directness to our attack but nothing amazing. A brilliant last ditch tackle however, showed the defenders how to ..um… Defend.
62′ Cazorla 5.0: Should’ve started ahead of Ozil really, but didn’t exactly stamp his authority on the game when he came on.
77′ Podolski 5.0: Was obvious he hasn’t played much football that’s for sure. The old Podolski would’ve buried his chance at the end after a nice initial touch.
