Aston Villa v Arsenal
Barclays Premier League
Kick off: Sept. 20 2014 3.00 PM BST
Arsenal travel to Aston Villa with a point to prove. Due to injuries, most of the squad picks itself apart from one outstanding issue – the midfield combination. So let’s dive right into it.
Wenger has so far struggled to find his best midfield combination. He’s persisted in trying to accommodate all of his best central midfielders and in doing so Mesut Ozil has played out on the wing similarly to his situation at the World Cup.
With Germany the No10 worked hard and was seen tracking back consistently, but let’s be honest Ozil’s talents are not best utilized from wide positions and central areas become far too congested.
Despite all of us either wanting Ozil to be dropped or at least reverted back to a more central position, some of Wenger’s latest comments suggest he will persist with his new formular to accommodate all his No10’s.
He said on the situation:
What is Wilshere but basically a No 10? He played his whole life at No 10. Somebody had to go out there. Is it Wilshere, Ozil or Ramsey… nobody is really natural out wide. So you keep good players out or you try to get them together.
It is [ambitious], but without ambition you cannot progress. We have that desire to play well altogether and I think we can really achieve it. We can have a fantastic team.
As a result Santi Cazorla continues to play a secondary role while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also struggles for game time despite their abilities to slot seamlessly into the struggling lineup.
The approach is not working and something has to change. The introduction of either of the aforementioned wingers for Ozil should happen, but unfortunately I don’t see Wenger changing his tune after his recent comments.
So here’s our predicted lineup, it’s certainly not our preferred lineup however..
Chambers Mertesacker Koscielny Gibbs
Alexis Ramsey Wilshere Ozil
