Arsenal are set to travel to Borussia Dortmund with just four fit, senior defenders with widespread reports suggesting that Nacho Monreal has been ruled out of the Champions League clash.
Although there is no certain explanation over his absence, the Spaniard was unable to train before the Gunners squad headed for Germany and will miss this weeks tie.
Luckily Kieran Gibbs is fit and will slot straight into left back, but the lack of options in defence is scary. Hector Bellerin will be the backup defender, with Calum Chambers set to start in place of the suspended and injury Mathieu Debuchy.
Monreal may well be joining the former Newcastle right-back on the treatment table, but hopefully not for as long as Debuchy who is expected to be out for a number of months after sustaining a nasty ankle injury against Manchester City on Saturday.
Debuchy’s compatriot Mathieu Flamini had plenty of sympathy for the summer signing and hopes the result of the impending scans are not as bad as we fear.
I’m just very sad for Mathieu Debuchy. We don’t know what he has but it looks serious. [It’s] very unfortunate for him and we wanted to win the game especially for him. We didn’t so now we have to recover.
Not a good start to the season. The squad has been dropping like flys game by game, we simply cannot afford any more injuries at the back. Fingers crossed Monreal’s absence is very short term, he is our backup centre back along with Chambers after all.
