Mesut Ozil, Arsenal’s German genius, has come under serious criticism from both the press and certain sections of fans this season. In the first few games, he failed to impress and oftentimes appeared detached from the game. Even though this was probably a result of him being forced to play out of position, people were quick to point out that he was underperforming.
But in the weekend game against Aston Villa, Ozil was finally allowed to start in his preferred position behind the striker and instantly showed his class with a man of the match performance, netting a goal and also providing an assist. He looked a completely different player from the previous few games; his movement was dangerous and every attack he started had the Villa defence scrambling.
After the match, Ozil finally spoke out to Arsenal.com, and responded to some of the criticism directed at him over the past few weeks. The World Cup winner said that he was completely at ease and that the criticism in no way affected him. He also added that he was enjoying his time at Arsenal and that he loved the system here.
You can’t forget that people don’t know you away from football.
You can’t really see what a person is really like when they are on the pitch. Sometimes a player will come across as arrogant and another as being a nice guy when in reality it could be the other way round.
At the club you always have to be respectful towards one another. It doesn’t matter if one player is a world star and the other is a newcomer. Everyone should be treated in the same way and that’s why I’m so happy at Arsenal, because that’s really the case here.
Everyone is treated the same way and has respect for one another. That’s a big help on the route to reaching your targets – when you’re like a family who make each other feel welcome and at home. That’s how it is here.
Clearly the star is very happy and fully committed to the team. Arsene Wenger has a reputation for getting the best out of his players, and this is clearly the case with Ozil. Wenger has already gone on record to say that Ozil’s form is directly linked to that of the team, and with the budding partnership that we witnessed between Ozil and Welbeck at Villa, it looks like the coming few games will be exciting affairs.
