The Gunners were heavily linked with a bid for Real Madrid star Sami Khedira in the summer transfer window but a move failed to materialise.
The former Gunners midfielder wants to see the North Londoners invest during the winter transfer window for a defensive midfielder if they are to compete for silverware.
According to Daily Star, he said:
I would have said it’s something that’s desperately needed.
If you look at Arteta, he’s having a lot more injuries now.
Once you’re over 32 it takes longer to recover.
That position could be the difference. The problem is: Who is available?
I think the club will buy players. If the right players are there, they will spend money.
In the last four or five years they couldn’t buy the players they wanted but the finances are there now.
The Gunners need to sign a defensive midfielder who can make his presence felt, someone to chuck their weight around, with haste. The intimidation is missing in the centre right now, as Arsenal’s midfield lacks the power once offered by the likes of Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva.
They are limiting their tactical options by failing to recruit such a player, as a specialist player in this role could have eased the side’s current defensive injuries by shielding the back four, while also providing the likes of Wilshere with greater opportunities to burst forward. We have been linked with the likes of Carvalho and Khedira in the summer and Wenger needs to sign one of them in January if we are to compete for the title.
