Arsene Wenger spoke to the press ahead of the upcoming North London Derby tomorrow. The veteran manager, who is now the longest continuously serving manager in the Premier League after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, will be taking charge of his 44th game against the Spurs. He is intimately familiar with the rivalry, and he says that it means more to him and the team than just three points.
Wenger stopped short of describing these clashes as “defining” moments of the season but admits a victory will give his team a substantial psychological boost ahead of a significant week of fixtures. He also complemented his opposite number, Mauricio Pochettino, saying that the former Southampton manager would bring some much needed stability to White Hart Lane. Pochettino is the 12th Tottenham manager that Arsene Wenger has faced during his tenure.
It’s an important moment of the season and it has a meaning for everybody. Above all it’s an opportunity for us to take points in the Premier League where every point counts.
It looks again this season that every point is difficult to make. Of course we play a home game and we want to win our home games.
Are they defining points [on Saturday]? I don’t know, but Tottenham has over the years had good players and a good team. To be on top of them of course means that you can fight for the top of the league.
It’s early in the season to judge a team but they have certainly less introduction of new players. They will benefit from stability and he’s a quality manager. He has shown that at Southampton.
I just hope we can get on top of Tottenham. It’s always a very heated atmosphere and I believe it will be a very competitive game as well.
The Spurs had started the season well, but have faltered somewhat since then, losing their last Premier League game at home to West Brom. Arsenal won their last game against Aston Villa convincingly, but then suffered a loss midweek to Southampton. Also, the Gunners may choose to rest players for their midweek fixture against Galatasaray. All in all, it promises to be a high intensity game and one worthy of watching.
