Arsene Wenger has confirmed Alexis Sanchez was rested for the trip to Aston Villa yesterday, squashing rumours of another injury to add to the collection.
The Chilean was a surprise omission from the matchday squad considering the importance the match held for boosting the sides confidence, however after playing every game this season it made sense for the new signing to be afforded some much needed rest.
Arsenal have a number of big games on the horizon, so Wenger opted to leave Sanchez behind and offer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a chance to impress.
The Arsenal boss confirmed to the press that Alexis’ omission was due to rest rather than suffering from any injury troubles:
Sanchez was rested today and of course he was completely available.
The Frenchman confirmed he did not consider offering under-fire Mesut Ozil a rest too considering the German had endured a tough start to the season:
No, not really, no. You consider it always, I have many offensive players and you always look to find the right balance and it’s not always easy because I gave Sanchez a rest as he played many games. We have plenty of experienced players who are not playing at the moment and are top quality. But I felt as well that it was at the point where you have to show him that confidence is there. He showed as well that he can respond when he’s under scrutiny.
Luckily Wenger had decided to retain the services of Ozil after he produced a Man of the Match performance for the first time this season, scoring his first away goal for the club and setting up Danny Welbeck’s first in Gunners colours too.
A wise choice to rest Alexis it seems especially with an intense run of fixtures on the horizon. It makes sense when we have players such as Santi Cazorla, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Tomas Rosicky and Lukas Podolski who can all offer us something on the wing.
Looking forward to seeing Alexis refreshed and ready for action however.
