Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly ready to step up interest in West Ham United wonder kid Reece Oxford amidst interest from rival Premier League clubs, according to reports in the Mirror.
The 15 year old captained the England U-17 team at a tournament in Denmark recently and is touted to follow in the footsteps of Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand.
The report states that Arsene Wenger has had West Ham defender Reece Oxford watched again, this time in an under-21 win over Sunderland on Monday. The teenager has been tracked for some time by Arsenal, who poached another highly-promising youngster, Ben Sheaf, from the Upton Park academy.
It further states that Chelsea have also shown interest in signing the young defender, but West Ham are reluctant to let him go and will fight hard to convince him to remain at Upton Park. The East London club are said to have offered him a bumper new contract to try and convince him to snub the big London clubs and stay with the Hammers for the foreseeable future.
The wonder kid has made six appearances for West Ham’s U21 side this season and has also captained the England U-17 side in this summer’s Nordic Under-17 tournament, where the young English Lions ended up finishing fourth.
Should we buy?
He is a centre-back and posses great height for someone of his tender years, standing at 6 ft 3. He is regarded as one of the best prospects to come out of West Ham in recent years, and has been likened to Rio Ferdinand who was a world class centre-back in his day.
The Hammers have offered him a big contract, but the financial might and lure of playing for Arsenal may see him leave for the Emirates if they make a move for him. He seems to be a great prospect for the future and with the track record that Wenger has with budding young players, he seems destined for Arsenal.
