Arsenal desperately need to strengthen their squad in several areas, central defense being one of them. Apart from the starting pair of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, the only other senior player we have as backup is youngster Calum Chambers.
Thus Wenger’s decision to let Belgian Thomas Vermaelen go during the summer transfer window was a confusing one, and a very risky one considering how injury prone most of the Arsenal squad are. Thus, one of the first areas we need to reinforce is our central defence. And, according to reports, Mats Hummels might be available for the Gunners.
Hummels said that if a club with a higher reputation than Dortmund were interested, but didn’t play the right style of football, then he wouldn’t give it a moment’s thought before rejecting them. However, this implies that if a high-profile club, who also play the right brand of football, came in then he would consider an exit. The Germany star has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, with both Arsenal and Manchester United ranking among his suitors.
But while United prefer playing a more direct brand of football, Arsenal’s style of one touch passing and retaining possession should appeal to the Dortmund trained Hummels. As such, if Arsene Wenger makes the right moves in the transfer window, he could very well lure the German to London.

Without a doubt, yes. We desperately need a centre back and someone of the quality of Hummels should simply not be passed up on. His reputation alone will help the club, and his defensive abilities will be a big boost to Arsenal. We have been worryingly leaky in defence this season, and some change is needed before it is too late.
What do you think? Can we land Hummels?
