With Arsenal looking to strengthen their midfield, a number of players have been linked to the club lately. One of these is Cheick Tiote, the imposing Newcastle central midfielder.
Newcastle have been suffering a run of terrible form this year, and have struggled to perform well this season as well. Under fire boss Alan Pardew seems unable to get a win at the moment, and after this week’s loss to Stoke City, he was handed a further blow when Tiote revealed that he is looking to move away.
I want to leave. I’ve spent four years with Newcastle.
I think I have reached a stage where it’s maybe time to look elsewhere for a new challenge.
Tiote claimed that Arsenal had enquired about him over the summer, and that he had also had offers from a Russian club. He says that he was unsure about his future at that time, but is now looking to move, preferably to another club in the Premier League itself. Manchester United are also reportedly monitoring the situation of the player.
I will focus on upcoming games and let’s see what happens between now and December.
It is true there were contacts for me from Arsenal and a club in Russia. I’d prefer to stay in England.
Should We Buy?
The hole in our defensive midfield is clearly noticeable, especially when we face quality opposition. Dortmund exploited the fact that we play Mikel Arteta out of position, and other big clubs will surely do the same. Our next opponents, Chelsea have some quick forwards like Willian and Eden Hazard who could pose serious problems to Flamini and Arteta.
As such, purchasing a quality defensive midfielder is top priority. Tiote is strong, can put in a hard tackle and he is quicker than our other options for the role. Also, he has experience in the Premier League and will be available cheap if he wants to leave. Provided we cannot land someone like Sami Khedira, Cheick Tiote is a good buy.
