With the small squad size and recurring injury problems of Arsenal, strengthening the squad seems like a good idea. Even today, news emerged of the injury to our German playmaker Mesut Ozil. While the midfield of our team still has some degree of depth, our forward and defence lines are still very weak.
To address the critical problems in our defensive line, one of the players we could look to bring in is Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte. The central defenfer is being closely followed by several of Europe’s elite clubs and the clubs are reportedly looking to trigger his release clause of £30 million.
The Gunners moved for Laporte in the summer, but the player opted to stay with Bilbao. Arsenal then bought in five other players for a total outlay of close to £70 million, but failed to find a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen. With the subsequent injuries to Mathieu Debuchy and Nacho Monreal our defence is with no cover in whatsoever. The defence needs to be strengthened, and Laporte seems to be ideal for the job.
Should We Buy?
Laporte he has been very impressive over the past couple of seasons. At just 20 years old, he plays with a maturity beyond his years, similar to Chambers. With over 50 games in Spain’s top flight under his belt, Laporte has experience of handling the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Arsenal need to start thinking about life after Koscielny and Mertesacker as both players are heading into their 30s. With no defensive competition, it sends out a message to the duo that they don’t even have to perform in order to play next week. That’s a terrible situation to have at a club. They need pressure from up and coming defenders, and the duo of Laporte and Chambers can provide that.
A fee of £30million might seem like a lot of money, but with his ability and age it is worth it. He is capable of playing for at least 10 years at the top level and has a good sell on value if things didn’t work out. A definite buy.
