Well, what can I say about that game? The lesser said the better. On a day where Aguero scored four, Chelsea and Crystal Palace played out a thriller, and Southampton put EIGHT past Sunderland, Arsenal managed…..a draw. And in typical Arsenal style, it took an injury time equalizer from Welbeck to salvage the point.
Were it not for Alexis Sanchez, this would have probably been the worst performance of the season so far. Possession is well and good, but Arsenal lacked cutting edge for the entire game. For what it’s worth, here are the player ratings.
Wojciech Szczesny| 5.0: The keeper had an average game. He could probably have done a better job with his positioning for the Diame goal but all the defenders appealing for a foul might have distracted him.
Hector Bellerin| 6.5: The young Spaniard looks to be a promising player and he turned in a good performance on his Premier League debut.
Nacho Monreal| 5.0: The full back was being played out of position so I cant really complain about his performance.
Per Mertesacker| 4.0: Sorry to say it, but the German seems lost at times. For the first goal everyone collectively chased after the ref, at least one defender should have stuck with Diame. For the second one, Mertesacker takes all the blame, allowed Hernandez to get the move on him. He is very slow, and falling asleep while marking younger, faster players is only going to end badly.
Kieran Gibbs| 7.0: I was impressed with the Englishman. He looked lively throughout the game, and was a constant threat down the flank. He kept troubling the opposition with his runs and crossing and also showed awareness to get back and defend when needed.
Mathieu Flamini| 5.0: The Frenchman had a game to forget. Admittedly, it was a foul by Diame in the buildup to the goal but dropping everything and stopping to appeal is not what is expected.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain| 6.0: The Ox was patchy today, he had a few moments of brilliance out wide but failed to perform consistently. This is disappointing especially considering the potential he has shown over the past few games; and with Walcott fit again he will have to do better if he wants to start regularly.
Jack Wilshere| 6.5: The midfielder turned in a typically energetic performance but faded in the second half. In the first half he made quite a few good runs and was heavily involved in the attacking play. His defensive work was also praiseworthy at times. There was a moment when Welbeck put in an aerial ball with Wilshere through on goal but he was unable to reach the pass. He was taken off with what looked like an injury, which is the last thing Arsenal need right now. Fingers crossed.
Santi Cazorla| 6.0: Like the Ox, the Spaniard performed in patches. He put in a good passing display, but the lack of a killer through ball was painfully obvious. This inability to find a moment of magic is why Wenger has been picking Ozil over Cazorla lately.
Alexis Sanchez| 8.0: MotM. In an otherwise cringeworthy Arsenal display, the energy and drive shown by Alexis Sanchez kept Arsenal alive. His first goal was sheer brilliance, making a forty yard run before slotting home across the keeper, and the assist for Welbeck was another moment of brilliance, as he beat what seemed to be half the Hull City team before squaring for the striker. I shudder to think where we would be without the Chilean.
Danny Welbeck| 6.5: Got his mandatory goal, and had a high workrate throughout, but still needs to work on his finishing. The striker had a couple of early chances that he really should have put away and maybe those early goals would have changed the course of the game. Overall, an okay performance from the striker.
Ramsey| 6.0: The midfielder came on around the hour mark and while it was heartening to see him back, he is clearly not fully match fit. Hopefully he reaches full fitness soon.
Campbell| 5.5: Came on for Wilshere as Arsenal pressed for the equaliser. Nothing special from the forward.
So, there you have it, another draw at home for Arsenal, along with the mandatory injury time goal and a player injury scare to boot.
