Jack Wilshere says it’s ‘unfair’ to accuse the team of not performing up to the level expected of them.
Arsenal players have come in for sharp criticism for their dismal showing against Hull City. The Gunners have had a poor start and lie in 7th place in the league table. Arsenal were top of the table this time last year and had 19 points,8 more than the current points tally.
Wilshere admits his team haven’t converted their dominance into points but is confident that Arsenal have enough in them to turn things around.
I think it’s unfair [to say we have under performed]. Maybe we haven’t got the results we wanted in some games, where we drew when we should have won the game. But if you look back through the games like we do, there is a lot of positive stuff. OK, we need more points than we have in the [Premier League] table but going forward we are in a confident place that we can get the points we need. We have played some tough games as well so we are happy, but we know we can do better as well.
Wilshere backed the defensive players to come good and says his team is determined to win the group.
Maybe our biggest or strongest point is going forward but we know we can defend. We have players who can put their foot in. We have players who organise things, in Flamini, and good defensive players.
That is the main goal, to win the group. In the past years we have tried to do that, even though we have had a tough group, like we did last year.
We will try our best to continue the performance from our last European game [against Galatasaray] to get the win out here and be in a stronger position to assess the group, then see what we can do in the last three games.
The Gunners are 3 points behind toppers Dortmund. Wenger’s men have finished second in the group in the last four years and faced tough opposition. Let’s hope we end up finishing top this time but knowing our luck, I won’t be surprised if Madrid, Barca, Bayern, Juventus end as runners up in their group.
