Arsenal club captain Mikel Arteta believes Kieran Gibbs has what it takes to become England’s first choice left back.
Gibbs was one of five Arsenal players to play for England in the recently held European qualifiers. Kieran’s England career has been something of a slow burner.
Arteta in his official match day programme said:
It was great for Kieran Gibbs to get back in the national team. He has been unlucky because it’s hard to see any other national team with three or four left backs who are top quality.
The Spaniard also feels that the sheer number of top quality left backs in the national side has made it harder for Gibbs.
Spain and Germany definitely don’t have that. No other international team has three or four top quality left backs like Ashley Cole, Leighton Baines, Luke Shaw and Gibbo. Now he’s got his chance, he has to take it because I think he can be a very good player for the national team. I’m very happy for him.
Arteta isn’t the first to express his admiration for Gibbs. Wenger too admired the Englishman after his fantastic performance against Spurs.
He was [a bit inhibited by his injuries] for a period. What doesn’t help is when you’re in and out because of injury. You need a consistent presence in the team.
If you don’t have a consistent presence at the top level, you do not have the confidence that makes you feel you belong to this world.
Gibbs’s potential is there for everyone to see but he has to stay fit. If Gibbs can maintain his fitness he can become a top class left back for both club and country.
