The 19 year old joined Arsenal from Southampton for £16 million this summer and he has been very impressive in the early stages of his career at the Emirates.
The former Liverpool midfielder believes the Gunners major weakness is in central midfield and he does not think Mikel Arteta is up to the standard required for a Champions League team.
Speaking to Goal, he said:
My problem with Arsenal is in the central midfield area. I think Arteta has been found out in that position for Arsenal. He’s not a holding midfielder, and if they had a holding midfielder I think they’d be serious contenders in the Premier League and the Champions League.
People say that Chambers has been bought to play in that role, and I’d like to see him there. If Chambers were to play there, and succeed, I think Arsenal will be a dark horse in the competition this year.
The lack of a prominent defensive midfielder who can shield the back four, as well as be a very good ball distributor, has raged on at the Emirates for quite some time now. Chambers has all the attributes to put in a shift in that position for the Gunners as he is tall, strong, possess a brilliant engine and technical ability as well as being able to pick out a decent pass.
He reads the game reasonably well, which is clearly visible from his performances so far, despite his hastiness to jump into tackles. He is not devoid of pace, either, like Arteta and Flamini and also has the defensive attributes to sit in front of the back four and be a destroyer of attacks and counterattacks.
