Arsenal today suffered yet another injury blow. Just yesterday, the already injury depleted squad found out that German playmaker Mesut Ozil would be out for three months. This is a major blow to their title hopes since the German is a real world class player. But at least we have players like Cazorla who can fill in for him.
Today was another bad day for Gunners fans. French international Laurent Loscielny, who was with the rest of the team at the training camp, was sent back to the club after it was discovered that he was suffering from tendonitis of both ankles. This injury to the Achilles tendon can potentially be a serious one, although it is too early to say for sure.
The injury comes at the worst possible time for Arsenal, who have already lost several members of the first team to injury. The injuries to Mathieu Debuchy and Nacho Monreal have left Arsenal with only four senior defenders, and now if Koscielny is truly injured seriously, then Wenger will have no option but to shift Calum Chambers into central defence and play youngster Hector Bellerin as full back.
While Chambers has been impressive so far this season, the 19 year old is very inexperienced and still needs quite some experience before he can become a dependable centre back. Similar for Hector Bellerin, who has been impressive in his two outings so far but is also severely lacking experience. With crucial games in both the League and in Europe coming up, this is extremely worrying.
While Arsenal do not expect Koscielny’s injury to force him out of action and anticipate he will be fit for their next game against Hull City, this just highlights the lack of squad depth at Arsenal and Arsene Wenger absolutely needs to reinforce the squad in the January transfer window. Aymeric Laporte is a possible option and Arsenal have also been linked to Chris Smalling. With the situation at the club, price can no longer be a factor. Wenger needs to pay money to bring in talent, and the sooner he does it, the better. Or else the time may soon come when Wenger will be forced to play himself.
