Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is one of five Gunners in the England squad for the qualifying rounds of Euro 2016. Arsenal are the best represented club in the national setup, and the Ox believes that this can only be beneficial in the long run.
He also spoke about how the majority of the team is very young, and he said that this would help the group form a bond and develop together, making the Three Lions a much more dangerous outfit in the coming tournaments. With several of the old guard out of the picture, the Ox believes that the time has come for the youngsters to step up and take some responsibility.
Seeing Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard retire is odd because they’ve been an integral part of the squad for so long and [had] a massive influence on the young boys as well.
They both helped me massively and I’m sure all the other young boys could say the same. It is weird to see them go but it’s now time for us to step up and take responsibility by filling those roles.
It had to be done at some point but it’s exciting and it’s a new-look England side where a lot of the younger boys are focal points, which is a good thing.
There’s a lot of talent in that squad at the moment and a lot of hardworking players as well, so I think it’s a good mix for a good squad in the future.
Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard retired in the summer after a disappointing World Cup campaign where England failed to progress from their group for the first time in 56 years.
The Ox was also enthused about the number of club mates he has in the national setup. Danny Welbeck, Kieran Gibbs, Jack Wilshere and Calum Chambers were selected alongside the Ox for the games against San Marino and Estonia, and Theo Walcott is also sure to be picked when he returns to full fitness.
When you’re with your team-mates at club level day-in, day-out, you understand each other and you can take that into international football.
If you find five of your team-mates in the squad it helps on the pitch and also gives you that togetherness off it as well. You can say the same about Liverpool as well because they have four players here.
I find that really good because it helps when you come onto the pitch and you know each other well. We’ve grown up together in the under-19s and under-21s as well so we know each other really well and that’s good going forward.
England breezed past San Marino and will look to do the same against Estonia. Several Arsenal players were in good form during the game against San Marino and it is to be hoped that their good form continues once they return to the club.
