For Arsenal, the position which needs reinforcement desperately is the defensive midfield slot. Arteta and Flamini have simply been unable to do justice to the position, and against attackers with pace, both have looked completely at sea. But with high profile targets like Sami Khedira reportedly rejecting the chance to move, Arsenal look destined to struggle in holding midfield for at least another season.
However, according to the Express, Arsenal are now looking elsewhere in Spain to fill that void. Sevilla midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak is the man Arsenal think can solve their problems, and they are firmly in pole position to secure his services, with only Borussia Dortmund providing any competition.
The Poland international only joined Sevilla in the summer, but had already been linked with a high-profile move in January after an impressive start to life in La Liga. He has also been capped 22 times by his national side, which is a testament to the players’ experience and capabilities.
Should we Buy?
There is no question that we need to sign a defensive midfielder, the only question is who that will be. Ideally we should look for someone with more experience in the elite European competitions, but since that seems unlikely, this promising youngster could be an inspired buy.
Dortmund are reportedly only willing to pay £18m for his services, while the Gunners are prepared to meet his buy-out clause of £24m. This is itself means that we can have the player for sure if Wenger decides to splash the cash in January. But we must not forget that the first priority remains a centre back, and with a reported budget of £20 million, Wenger might choose to postpone any deal for the Pole until the summer.
