Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly keeping tabs on Sporting Lisbon right-back Cedric Soares, according to reports in the Metro.
The 23 year old right-back is highly-rated and is regarded as one of the finest young full-backs in the game at the current moment. The Gunners have been searching for a defender for some time and the Sporting Lisbon youngster has been one of those the club have been keeping tabs on.
The report states that the North London club have moved a step closer to signing Sporting Lisbon defender Cedric after the player’s agent talked up a January switch to the Emirates Stadium and Wenger is considering meeting his £25.5 million release clause in January.
The youngster is under contract at Sporting until 2016, but the defender is reportedly refusing to sign an extension to his current deal.
When asked about Arsenal’s interest, Veloso did say that they are in talks over a new deal at Sporting but left the door open to a move by admitting that anything is possible. He said:
We are happy his work is being recognised.
Right now, we continue to negotiate the renewal of the contract between Cedric and Sporting. But nothing is agreed.
All scenarios are possible [in January].
Should we Buy?
He is a small and diminutive figure and stands at only 5 ft 7 in, so naturally prides himself on his speed and tenacity rather than his aerial presence. The fullback was used as an offensive right winger during his younger days, but has not been used further up field since his debut.
However like many modern fullbacks, is arguably more comfortable going forward. He can create chances for his teammates, and relies more on aggression in defence than natural defensive acumen.
I don’t think signing a right-back should be our priority as Mathieu Debuchy should be back in December and Calum Chambers has done a steady job filling in, while Hector Bellerin looks to have a bright future ahead of him. Our focus should be on a central defender if we’re to bring in a defender this winter.
