The saga over Dortmund defender Mats Hummels goes on, with the latest reports saying that Arsenal have deemed the player too expensive and are looking elsewhere for an affordable defender.
The Gunners were rumoured to be favourites to sign the German, but Dortmund’s asking price is above Arsene Wenger’s budget and as such the Frenchman is now looking at Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte.
With Wenger having more or less promised to bring in a defender in January, the young Frenchman could fit the bill perfectly. The 20 year old has impressed lately for the France Under-21’s side and has already made 14 appearances for his club this season. For a youngster, he is very mature and confident on the ball, but whether the fans will react well to yet another youngster rather than an experienced veteran remains to be seen.
In another piece of defensive news, Southampton man Morgan Schneiderlin is reportedly considering his options and could choose to leave St. Mary’s soon, according to this report. The 25 year old was strongly linked to Tottenham over the summer but a move failed to materialise. Now, the player is reportedly seeking to leave the club should they fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.
He was one of the few players Southampton managed to retain during their mass exodus over the summer, but the Saints seem even better this season and it will be surprising if they choose to let him leave now. However, Wenger has an affinity for French players and may succeed in luring the defensive midfielder to the Emirates. This is what the player had to say:
Today I am at Southampton. We are second in the Premier League, it is going well.
We’ll see at the end of the season what will happen if we are still in the Champions League places and I will make the choice. I will see with my club.
He is certainly leaving his options open but will be unavailable until the summer window at least.
Also in the news today is Palermo starlet Paulo Dybala, who is attracting attention from both Arsenal and Southampton according to this report.
The Argentinian striker has had an excellent start to the season, putting in some quality performances which have not gone unnoticed outside of Italy’s top flight.
However, president of the Rosanero, Maurizio Zamparini, has already announced his reluctance to sell off the 20-year-old star, citing a bid of at €40 million will be needed to prise the man dubbed the ‘new Sergio Aguero’ from the Stadio Barbera.
Dybala has four Serie A goals to his name already this season, however Arsenal are unlikely to invest in yet another forward. That being said, Southampton are known for scouting out exciting talent and maybe we should continue to monitor this player for the future.
