Arsenal’s defensive midfielder Mathieu Flamini has admitted that Alexis Sanchez has a long way to go before he can be compared to club legend Theirry Henry.
The 25 year old moved from Barcelona in a £32 million move in the summer and has impressed on the wing for his new side. Having scored 19 league goals for Barcelona last season he has netted five in his opening eight Premier League games.
The French international played down media reports which stated that he likened the Chilean to Henry, however Flamini has now made it clear that he was misquoted in the media.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, he said:
Alexis is a top quality player and is proving that in every game he plays with us, but he only arrived a couple of months ago.
Alexis and Thierry don’t play in the same role either, so I would never compare Alexis with another legend in this club. I didn’t make any comparison.
He is a top player, but we must remember Thierry is a legend at this club. He played for Arsenal for many seasons and he did so much for this club, he won so much for this club, so you can’t make this comparison, especially not today.
He’s done extremely well. He’s a great player and he gives so much to the team, not only offensively but also defensively.
He works very hard and that’s very important for us because getting the ball back very quickly when the game is open makes all the difference. He’s a great finisher, has a great spirit and we’re all really excited that he’s with us.
The Chilean has the perfect pairing of tenacity and technique. He forces defenders into mistakes, then has the requisite composure to punish them. It’s a combination that has made him an instant hit in English football. His desire is quite incredible and it’s rare to see a player so gifted and yet so prepared to graft.
His fusion of guts and guile is reminiscent of Luis Suarez and fortunately for Arsenal and Alexis, he doesn’t seem to share the same temper that marred Suarez’s time in English football. In Alexis, Arsenal have a true star who has the talents to emulate the success of club legend Henry, but I think that it’s too early to compare them.
