The transfer window is getting closer every day, and every day Arsenal are being linked to more and more players. Despite Wenger’s well known aversion to spending in January, this time he will have to go into the market to find reinforcements for our defensive lineup, and as such we have been linked with almost every available defender in Europe (or so it seems).
And the reports are unwilling to stop there, as Arsenal are being linked to not only defenders but also attacking midfielders and forwards. Despite the fact that we already have enough midfielders to fill a couple of teams, more and more keep being linked with a switch to the Emirates.
And today’s Metro report breaks all boundaries, claiming that Arsenal are angling for a double transfer from Porto, with Jackson Martinez and Juan Fernando Quintero both on the wish list.
Despite the fact that Quintero is a playmaker (like Cazorla and Ozil) and Martinez is a striker (like Welbeck, Giroud, Sanogo, Campbell, Podolski….) the report claims that Arsenal are willing to shell out a cool £60 million in January to land the pair, who they have been scouting for a long time.
Evidently, all those reports about Wenger being given a £20 million transfer budget were not read by these guys. That limitation to our spending has already resulted in Mats Hummels possibly slipping from our grasp, thanks to his price tag of close to £40 million. But by all means, let us spend a ton of money strengthening our forward line despite the fact that we have been unable to give adequate playing time to Podolski, Sanogo and Campbell.
I anticipate that this will only be the first of many such reports, and Arsenal will be linked to pretty much every player available by the time January actually comes around.
