Real Madrid and Germany midfielder Sami Khedira is all set to sign a new contract with the Spanish giants, according to the Express. The central midfielder had been linked with a number of English clubs, and his failure to get playing time at the Bernabeu was believed to be the driving factor. Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea were all ready to offer terms for the talented players’ signature.
However, according to reports, Khedira is instead set to pen a new contract under Carlo Ancelotti after witnessing compatriot Ozil fail to inspire after joining Arsenal for a club-record £42.5 million over a year ago. The playmaker has come under fire after a number of poor performances, and Khedira is not prepared to put his own reputation on the line after helping Germany win the World Cup during the summer.
The reports also claim that Khedira has been closely monitoring Ozil’s English experience and is not impressed with the quality of football on display, and will instead sign a new deal worth £3m a year running until 2018.
If this is indeed true, then not only is it a further setback to Arsenal’s attempts to sign a quality midfield man; but it also does not bode well for English football as a whole that the best players in the world choose to stay away.
