Former Arsenal striker Paul Merson has branded the Gunners as tactically clueless after they squandered a three goal lead against Anderlecht in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday.
The Gunners looked to be in cruise control thanks to a first-half penalty from Mikel Arteta, swiftly followed by an Alexis Sanchez strike, before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain added a third after the break, but Wenger’s men managed to collapse in sensational style to gift the visitors a share of the spoils.
The former Gunner was appalled by the lack of awareness displayed by the team when they were 3-0 ahead against their Belgian visitors.
According to Sky Sports, he said:
I think they are tactically clueless, that’s an honest opinion.
This is not the first time it’s happened, it’s happened a lot. It’s absolutely clueless. For me the manager has to get a message on, but these are international footballers, they are not little kids.

They play for their countries, in World Cups, in the Premier League, and they are all bombing forward. Surely something in your head, if you know football, you say let’s stop here, let’s have two banks of four, leave two up front and let them us break us down. It’s clueless as football knowledge.
The Gunners played beautifully in the first half and when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain put his team up 3-0 after 58 minutes, defeat seemed unthinkable. Then came the collapse, as Arsenal conceded three goals in 30 mad minutes to throw away the victory.
There were things to be excited about the game as Oxlade-Chamberlain put in a superb display and Sanchez scored another outstanding goal. However, if Arsenal continue to defend this poorly, all that attacking ability will come to nothing and the Gunners will struggle to achieve their goals this season.
