Before the game I wrote I’d settle with a draw. We couldn’t get it. It was a fourth defeat in fifteen matches and it could have been a lot worse.
Here are the ratings from today’s game:
Emiliano Martinez | 3.25: It’s not the best thing for a young goalkeeper to concede a goal after just 20 seconds of the game in front of the hostile fans. Martinez had a poor game from the very beginning, he wasn’t safe with long shots and he should have done better with Bojan’s goal.
Hector Bellerin | 3.0: Was ran over by the hosts and didn’t provide the best reaction for the first goal we conceded. Made a great run and cross that Giroud should have headed home to make it 1:1 though. He was left on the bench at half-time. Hopefully his confidence won’t be ruined by today’s performance. Just like Martinez, Bellerin’s talent is unquestionable.
Calum Chambers | 2.75: Was sent off for two bookable offences. Now, Anthony Taylor is a disgraceful referee but Chambers is far from a finished article. That’s why he makes so many needless fouls and gets yellow cards on a regular basis. Not good.
Per Mertesacker | 3.0: The BFG didn’t have an easy task today – he played next to three youngsters (Martinez, Bellerin, Chambers) and a not-fully-fit Gibbs. Nevertheless, his lack of pace was exploited again. Koscielny was heavily missed.
Kieran Gibbs | 3.5: Didn’t close down the flank well enough and dithered with a cross at 3:2 that could have made the difference.
Mathieu Flamini | 5.0: Earned the first penalty for Arsenal in the league since Anfield in February but it was the softest one. If it was a dive, feel free to take half a mark from him. Anyway, The Flame was better at right-back in the second half than in the middle before the break.
Aaron Ramsey | 6.0: If there was a bright spot today, it was that fact Aaron Ramsey scored a goal against The Orcs at their own lair. It was a well-taken volley that should inject a lot of confidence into the Welshman. Aside from that, he had an off game which is not surprising given that he hasn’t had too much rest in the last ten days.
Santi Cazorla | 6.5: His shooting wasn’t the best but he gave a relatively solid performance. He scored his first goal of the season by converting a penalty.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain | 5.75: Didn’t offer enough protection to our full-backs and didn’t make an impact in the final third.
Alexis Sánchez | 6.75 (MOTM): Worked his socks off again, made a brilliant run similar to the one against Sunderland but the post didn’t allow his effort to be rewarded. Was on the wrong end of poor Taylor’s refereeing. He needs a rest against Galatasaray.
Olivier Giroud | 2.5: Failed to bring us back into the game after Bellerin’s cross and was poor for the biggest part of the match. He’ll have a rest given that he is not registered for the Champions’ League. Perhaps he’ll have another good goal-scoring performance against Newcastle next week?
Danny Welbeck | 6.0: Offered us more energy and pace in the attack but was denied by the brilliant Begović. His ball-control still doesn’t look assuring though.
Lukas Podolski | 5.5: Didn’t offer too much after entering the pitch.
Joel Campbell | N/A: Didn’t have enough time to make an impact.
