With the transfer window coming up, there is an abundance of rumours linking players to the Emirates, but the manager himself has not confirmed any so far. Arsene Wenger, who is notorious for not being active in the January transfer window made it clear that he would buy only if the ‘right player’ becomes available. Who the right player is, he did not say but with our situation right now we really cannot afford to be choosers.
Our injury problems are the stuff of nightmares; we have had an unbelievable number of them so far and have not had a full strength defence since the start of the season. Now even our midfield is decimated, to the point that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is playing in a central role. Wenger can speak all he wants about finding the perfect player but the fact of the matter is we need numbers, and fast. Another couple of months like this without reinforcements and Wenger will be forced to play the youth team in the League.
Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn agrees that the team needs reinforcements and he believes that Wenger is the man to bring them in. The former player said that he is very interested in seeing what Wenger does now that funds have been made available to him.
My take on it is we are in a new period for Arsenal, particularly since the signing of Mesut Ozil.
It looks as if the club has got some substantial funds now and I think Arsene Wenger needs to look at the situation and decide if he can get reinforcements in.
I’d like to see him in charge simply I because I’d like to see, with the money I believe is now available, whether he will change and look to bring in new players, and it is looking like he will.
Wenger has spent quite a bit over the past two seasons buying players like Sanchez and club record signing Ozil.
However this season he failed to replace the outgoing Vermaelen and that has resulted in a constant void in our defence.
Winterburn acknowledges Arsenal need new players in January, and quality ones at that, not just bargains. The likes of William Carvalho, Morgan Schneiderlin, Lars Bender, Sami Khedira and Mats Hummels have been linked, and the former Arsenal great has backed Wenger to make the right moves in the transfer window.
The squad is too thin and there are certain areas they know need to be improved if they are going to challenge for the title next season, which Arsene Wenger is telling us is going to happen. Arsenal have never spent £40 million before like they did with Ozil and £30 million like they did on Alexis Sanchez. Now, if he went out and did that on a holding midfield player and maybe another centre-half then people would start to say Arsene Wenger is changing his ways.
Let’s hope Wenger lives up to Nigel’s expectations. A change in his mentality will not do us any harm at the moment and that goes for his tactics as well. Too often this season we have shown weaknesses that cannot be explained away due to injuries alone.
I asked Santa for a defensive midfielder/defender for Christmas. Let’s hope that the manager did the same.
