Arsenal legend Robert Pires believes that Arsenal would have to be crazy to sack veteran manager Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman has had a torrid season so far, and the team have failed to really get going. Injury problems have compounded the issue and have led to several fans calling for the dismissal of the long term manager. This situation reached its peak during the away game at Stoke, where Wenger was jeered by the travelling fans while waiting for the train.
But former winger Pires says that Wenger is still the right man for the job; and while he sympathised with the fans he said that letting Wenger go would be the worst possible decision for the club. He pointed to the example of Manchester United and what happened after Sir Alex Ferguson retired. He also said that it would be even worse at the Emirates.
I understand the fans, I really do. I want to see Arsenal do better. He has spent a lot of money, and I can see that the results should be better.
But Wenger is the man for Arsenal, 100%. It would be crazy for the board to let a manager go who has made Arsenal into what it is today.
I do not like to think of what Arsenal would be without him as manager.
The winger, who now plays for the Goa team in the Indian Super League, was part of the famous ‘Invincibles’ team that went an entire season without losing. Alongside the likes of Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires was one of the most influential figures of that era. His support comes on the heels of Thierry Henry’s, who also urged the fans to give the manager more time.
This club (Arsenal) changed my life, in particularly Arsene Wenger. Arsene is like (Alex) Ferguson, he is part of the club.
Look at what has happened to Manchester United since Ferguson left?
Worse could happen at Arsenal.
