Defensive midfielder Mathieu Flamini believes that Arsenal’s team spirit and togetherness is the cause of their recent swing in fortunes. Having failed to win for three games before last week, the Gunners have racked up three wins on the trot, scoring four and conceding none. This is great news for both our League prospects and also because it will be an invaluable boost to the team’s confidence.
The defence has shown improvement in particular; since Emiliano Martinez has taken over goalkeeping duties, we have kept three clean sheets. The reunited pairing of Mertesacker and Koscielny is very reassured in central defence and their presence adds stability to our entire side. Our attacks are sharper and the whole team seems much more coordinated. The Frenchman was sorely missed. This defensive improvement needs to be maintained going forward however; so many points were dropped this season simply because we conceded with every shot the opponents got on target.
This is what Flamini had to say:
First of all the win against Southampton was a great satisfaction. There is a great team spirit so it was very important for us to win that game, because we’re now back in the top places.
Now we’re playing every three games and every game is important and can make a difference. It was a big satisfaction because we lost a few games and didn’t have the results we were hoping for, even if we were playing well.
This game was very important for us to win, and also in front of our fans because Southampton are in the top places too.

The team spirit can make the difference when you have difficult moments. We saw it where we had a difficult period and the team spirit made the difference. Now we’re back on track.
Six games to go this month, five of which are in the Premier League. Except probably Liverpool, the rest should be easy wins for us. It is time to start putting the points in the bank for our Top Four challenge. But just because we seem to be recovering, the underlying problems should not be forgotten. Investment is required in January, both in the defense and a defensive midfielder as well. Only after we have adequate cover in all positions can we really start to dream about a title challenge.
