There is a common saying, “You do not know what you have till you lose it!” In Arsenal’s case, luckily, we still have Olivier Giroud. When Olivier Giroud first came to the club, he was vilified by Arsenal fans for his obvious flaws. That he is not quick is an understatement and he tended to miss more chances than he scored. Never mind that his goal scoring record in his first season was nothing to be sniffed at. Every fan also seemed to forget the fact that Thierry Henry, the club’s top scorer, had also struggled to settle during his first season.
Olivier Giroud does not have a bad injury record. Infact, before his long injury layoff, I cannot remember Giroud missing a game for any other reason other than a lack of form. This means that while he was scoring and holding up the ball well for his teammates, fans preferred to concentrate on his flaws celebrating when Welbeck came to the club as they believed Arsenal would start launching lightning quick attacks. While Welbeck has settled in well at Arsenal, he is never going to be prolific meaning Arsenal have lacked the cutting edge when it matters the most.
Giroud’s absence has left a gaping hole in our attack that has never been filled even though Alexis Sanchez has done his utmost best to limit the damage. It says a lot that every fan believes if Giroud had been present from the beginning of the season, Arsenal might still have been in with a shout at the Premier League title. As it is, we are out of the title race and unless the rest of the teams around us begin to drop points…pray for a miracle!
Giroud needs to start every game from now till the end of the season if Arsenal is to win something this season. He has shown his importance to the team and I am glad he has come back without showing any signs of rustiness. Welcome back Olivier Giroud!
