Arsenal were linked with a deal to sign William Carvalho throughout last summer, and the Sporting Lisbon midfielder has now fanned the flames by expressing a desire to move to the Premier League.
The anchor player, who can also play at centre back, could be an ideal successor for Mikel Arteta at the base of our midfield, and suggested a transfer was in the hands of his agent.
“My dream is to play in England,” Carvalho is quoted as having told the Daily Mirror.
“I know some clubs are interested but my agent Jorge is looking after it and I am relaxed.
“Now my mission is to work in Sporting and they will be in charge of any transfer and my future. That is very important.”
The Jorge that Carvalho refers to is Jorge Mendes, the infamous super-agent, and a man that Arsene Wenger has typically been reluctant to deal with given Arsenal’s signings to date.
However, Carvalho is a special player, and could be worth the effort – particularly with third party ownership coming under increased scrutiny. The 6’1″ defensive midfielder is an immense physical presence, strong in the tackle and excellent in possession.
His calmness on the ball and superb positioning would make him a great acquisition – if the Gunners could land his signature.
