A defensive signing is a must this January, and Villarreal centre-back Gabriel Paulista is seemingly a potential candidate at the moment, according to the Guardian.
With Mathieu Debuchy suffering a dislocated shoulder during our 3-0 win over Stoke City, our defensive crisis has worsened. Paulista could prove an excellent signing, and has been fantastic since moving to La Liga for £2.5m in 2013.
The 24-year-old has responded to talk of a Gunners transfer, and it seems as though a deal to bring him to the Emirates may be in the offing.
“Whether I go to Arsenal or stay at Villarreal, I won’t lose my head,” he said.
“I’m very calm. My head is at Villarreal and I’m very focused. My agent is working on making sure I continue being calm.”
The Spanish side are keen on bringing Joel Campbell to the club on loan, which could go a long way to helping us get a deal done. Arsene Wenger has insisted that the Costa Rican will be staying at Arsenal this season, but if we can secure Paulista’s services then it could prove to be a good trade.
He has spoken in the past of his desire to play in the top flight of English football, which will only serve to make our acquisition easier.
“Playing in the Premier League is one of my dreams,” he said.
“I have spoken to my agent about this.”
Having been linked to a number of defenders this January, Paulista is arguably the most promising target. He is a quality centre-back, while still being relatively young. He should also prove to be fairly affordable, and could become a mainstay at the back for years to come.
