We are allegedly plotting a surprise bid for Real Madrid star Asier Illarramendi this January, with the midfielder open to making a switch to the Emirates, according to Spanish publication Marca.
The 24-year-old has struggled for first team football since making his €32m move from Real Sociedad, fueling speculation that he could be looking for a way out of the Bernabeu.
With Lucas Silva allegedly set to arrive in Madrid this January, Illarramendi will surely only see his opportunities at the club limited further. And with our current need for a defensive midfielder, it could be a superb bit of business to bring him in if we can get a deal done cheaply.
Krystian Bielik was recently brought in from Legia Warsaw, and with Francis Coquelin making his shock rise to prominence our situation is not as dire as it has been in recent times. A dominant defensive midfielder still should be high on Arsene Wenger’s list however, and Illarramendi could prove a fantastic long term solution to our midfield woes.
