Arsenal’s defence were horribly exposed today and had a shocking day at the office. The score line heavily flattered us, could quite of easily been 5-0. That said, we had enough chances to get back into the game but failed to convert.
Two poor defensive mistakes allowed Southampton an easy win to ring in the New Year and leave Arsenal three points behind the fourth placed Saints.
It’s worth mentioning we should have had a red card to last man Gardos who took down Alexis just outside the box. Horrendous decision from the referee which could’ve changed the complexion of the game.
Here are the player ratings (out of 10):
Szczesny 2.5: Caught in no mans land for Mane’s opener and ended with egg splattered on his face. Made one superb save in particular to deny Ward-Prowse but he handed Tadic a New Years Day gift with a horrific clearance.

Debuchy 2.0: Was horribly at fault for Saints’ second (not sure why he took a touch and didn’t just clear it) and continually cut apart by Tadic in the second half. Another game to forget for the Frenchman and will be pleased to receive a rest this weekend.
Mertesacker 2.0: Will feel like he should have done better with his clearance from Mane’s shot but the damage was already done. Some poor positioning and lack of pace badly exposed today.
Koscielny 2.0: Was at fault for being out muscled by Mane for the opener and was beaten too easily on a number of occasions. Horrible back pass for Szczesny which almost costed us another. The back line really struggled with Southampton’s balls over the top and pace in behind. Easily his worst performance this season.
Gibbs 3.0: Failed to convince going forward and wasted several opportunities with some poor crossing. Wasn’t the worst defensively however.
Coquelin 3.0: An excellent slide tackle early on showed some dominance in the centre of the park but wasn’t a convincing display, a little sloppy on the ball and in possession. Some poor marking allowed Ward-Prowse to miss from close range.
Chambers 5.0: Certainly not the most adventurous display but he sprayed the ball around well. That said, Southampton were able to cut Arsenal open far too easily considering we had five defenders on the pitch and Coquelin.
Cazora 4.0: Had a fantastic opportunity to hand Arsenal the lead but again his shooting boots were missing. Seemed tired and his shooting reflected that.
Rosicky 6.5: Some excellent tackles and promising runs down the flank. Was more effective through the middle however and injected plenty of energy and dynamism into the side. Became steadily more sloppy.
Ox 7.0: Almost scored an awkward but what would have been sensational volley and was a constant threat. Some powerful driving runs that were a little in vain thanks to some sloppy first touches from others. Still yet to score away from home despite some decent attempts.
Alexis 7.0: Continues to impress in an Arsenal shirt and can feel hard done by to not beat Forester on a number of occasions. He often seemed isolated up top and can’t do it on his own.
60′ Walcott 3.5: Took twenty minutes to even get a touch on the ball and barely had an impact. Almost got played in by Rosicky. A disappointing cameo.
83′ Akpom 6.0: N/A – barely touched the ball.
