Arsene Wenger is confident Gabriel Paulista has all the attributes required to succeed in the Premier League, and claims he is nothing like “PlayStation” player David Luiz, as reported by ESPN.
Our newest acquisition completed his move from Villarreal last week, and looks like the kind of player who could really strengthen our squad.
Arsene Wenger claims he is a “real defender”, unlike former Chelsea man David Luiz. Having moved to PSG for an astronomical fee, Luiz is a regular for Brazil alongside Thiago Silva. Gabriel Paulista is yet to earn a single cap however, despite being part of one of the best defences in La Liga this season.
His high profile move to Arsenal is likely to propel him into the spotlight, and may alert his international manager to the quality he possesses. Wenger is well aware of his quality already however, and has backed him to be a huge success in the top flight of English football.
“Gabriel is a different style to David Luiz, who looked more as a defensive midfielder, rather than a centre-back, because of his level of concentration and his dynamic [play] going forward,” he said.

“I think Gabriel is a typical defender. David Luiz you didn’t know if he was a midfielder, as he had the potential always to play. Gabriel is a more typical defender. He is a real defender, who wants to defend.”
The 24-year-old is unlikely to slot straight into the starting XI, but his versatility should see him given plenty of opportunities. Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have developed a formidable partnership, but Gabriel could be the future of our back line.
